Course Objectives:

STEM is ubiquitous in daily life. Yet, the European Union is currently facing a shortage of over 2 million STEM professionals, with only a quarter of high school students pursuing scientific-technological fields. The goal of this course is to foster a positive relationship with STEM disciplines throughout the entire educational journey—with a specific focus on primary and lower secondary education—by turning the discovery of STEM into an everyday experience.

Specifically, this course provides practical teaching ideas for educators in the "First Cycle" (K-8). It empowers them to leverage daily exposure to STEM to create a "continuous laboratory," where students can learn and experiment with mathematical, technical, and scientific disciplines as essential tools for interpreting the reality that surrounds us.

Course program:

1. Data from the world around us: collection and analysis of random events
Introduction to statistics. Methods of data collection and visualization. Measurement and description of stochastic processes.

2. Discovering geometry: polygons drawn by a robot.
The properties of geometric shapes. The basics of block programming language. Programming an educational robot. Construction and development of algorithms. Classifying and describing the properties of complex geometric shapes.

3. Measuring the cosmos: measuring the expansion of the Universe and distances in the Cosmos.
Basic notions of cosmological principles. The main techniques for observing the Universe. The use of models in data analysis.

4. Artificial intelligence: teaching a robot autonomous driving.
Principles of artificial intelligence (AI). The stages of design and production of an AI system. Environment/machine interactions.
